Karuta かるた
Competitive Hyakunin Isshu Karuta is one of the world's fastest memorisation-reaction games: 100 classical poems, two sets of cards, and a race to touch the right card from the first syllable. Chihayafuru made it a global phenomenon.
Rules
Setup: 25 tori-fuda (playing cards) per player in three rows (8-8-9), 15 minutes to memorise. Reciter reads from yomi-fuda (full poem deck). Players identify the poem from the first syllable (kami-no-ku) and touch the matching tori-fuda. Touch in your territory: remove that card. Touch in opponent territory: take the card and send one of yours to them. First to clear all 25 from your territory wins. Best of three in formal matches; official reciters; tatami room; bow at start and end.

Tips for beginners
Learn torifuda starting syllables in groups; single-syllable determiners first. Position your 25 cards so well-known poems are in front for faster reach. Swipe low and fast rather than high. Practise with recitation apps to build syllable-to-card reflex.
Cultural context
