Sugoroku 双六
Sugoroku covers two traditions: ban sugoroku (backgammon-like with dice and bearing off) and e-sugoroku (illustrated race boards with square instructions). Both are New Year and gift favourites.
Rules
Ban sugoroku: board layout like backgammon; two dice; move pieces according to rolls; hit opponent blots to send them back; bear off when all pieces are in the inner board. E-sugoroku: roll a die, move along a illustrated path; squares instruct you to advance, go back, miss a turn, or take shortcuts; first to the goal wins. Tōkaidō sugoroku used the famous Edo road as theme. Multiple players; deliberately luck-based. Modern variants keep the race format with manga, anime, and educational themes. Nengajo sugoroku are New Year postcard-sized boards.
History
Ban sugoroku arrived from China or Korea; Heian aristocrats played it. Edo-period gambling bans drove e-sugoroku as a legal, illustrated alternative—race boards with themed squares instead of bearing-off. Tōkaidō boards by Hiroshige-era artists depicted the road from Edo to Kyoto. Meiji propaganda and educational boards followed. Postwar children's sugoroku; today manga and anime board versions remain popular. Museum collections preserve Edo boards; a retro gaming revival keeps both forms alive.
Tips for beginners
Ban sugoroku: hit opponent blots to slow them; bear off efficiently. E-sugoroku: no strategy—deliberately luck-based, teaching children to handle fortune. Enjoy the theme and the ride.
Cultural context
New Year gift tradition (nengajo sugoroku); Tōkaidō road culture. Museum collections of Edo boards; retro gaming revival. Educational sugoroku still published. Ban sugoroku uses a backgammon-like board; e-sugoroku boards are illustrated race tracks. Both forms are available commercially; manga and anime tie-in boards are popular. Sugoroku teaches children to handle luck; no strategy required, which makes it ideal for mixed-age play.
